IZUNO

 

ずっと昔、伊豆湯ヶ島村に、与左衛門という若いきこりがおりました。与左衛門の家は、代々、天城山の木々を伐採することを生業とするきこりの家系で、村のきこりたちの中では、頭領の立場でした。

Once upon a time, a young woodcutter named Yozaemon lived in Yugashima Village, Izu. For generations, his ancestors had worked as woodcutters, falling the trees on Mount Amagi and leading the other woodcutters in the village.

 

ある日、与左衛門は、仕事に精を出すあまり一人でどんどん先を行き、他の者たちと逸れてしまいました。

天城の山中、そこは鬱蒼とした茂みで、大きな木が幾つも生え、そばを滝が流れ落ちていました。実はその地は、与左衛門の先祖の与一が、木々の伐採を固く禁じ、踏み入ることも禁じた辺りでした。

滝を見渡すと、その激しくしぶきを上げているさまに、与左衛門も吸い込まれていくようなめまいを覚えます。

One day, being very eager to work, diligent Yozaemon walked too fast and became separated from the others behind him. In a deep forest on Mount Amagi, he was alone. Many tall trees were around him, and there was a waterfall. His ancestor, Yoichi, had forbidden entering or cutting trees there. Yozaemon looked at the waterfall, where water violently splashed and sprayed. He felt dizzy, feeling as if he were being drawn into the waterfall basin.

 

「ああ、いけねぇ」

与左衛門は気を持ち直し、滝上の大きな木に向かうと、そんな場所だとも気付かずに、持っていた斧を振り上げようとしました。と――。

誤って手を滑らせ、斧が飛んでいってしまい、滝の真下で見えなくなりました。

与左衛門は、大事な斧を失くしてはたまらんと、すぐさま服を脱ぐと、ふんどし一つになって、滝壺に飛び込みます。

“Oops!” Yozaemon regained control of himself and faced a tall tree growing over the waterfall. Unaware that this was the forbidden place, he raised his ax to cut the tree. The ax slipped out of his hand and fell into the basin. Trying to get his precious ax back, Yozaemon took his clothes off immediately. Naked except for his loincloth, he jumped into the basin.

 

滝壺は思ったよりも深く、渦を巻いていて、斧を探すのが困難でした。与左衛門が息をしようと顔を上げた際、ぎょっとなりました。

滝の横に、裸の女が立っていたのです。

死人のように白い肌の、髪の長い若い女でした。

「おまえが落とした斧は、これか？」

The basin was deeper than he thought; the water was swirling; looking for the ax was difficult. When Yozaemon came up to the surface to breathe, he was surprised. A naked woman was standing by the waterfall. She was young and had deadly pale skin and long hair. She asked, “Is it this the ax that you dropped?”

 

ふいに問われた与左衛門は、驚きに声も出ず、女を見つめました。

女は与左衛門の斧を持っていました。

「何故、ここへ来た？　ここは、おまえの先祖・与一が、立ち入りを禁じた地であろう？」

女は、あらわな白い胸を隠そうともせず、驚く与左衛門を見つめ、それから斧を差し出して握らせると、言いました。

「よいか。わたしと会うたことは、村の者には言ってはならぬ。決してな。かつて、おまえの先祖とも、昔、わたしは会うておる。おまえの先祖の与一は、わたしの言いつけをまこと守り、村の名主にまで成ったのだからな……」

女はそれから背を向けると、ゆっくりと滝壺に沈んでいきました。

To this sudden question, Yozaemon could not answer or say anything; he just stared at the woman. The woman was holding his ax. She asked again, “Why did you come here? Didn’t you know that this is the place that your ancestor Yoichi forbid entering?” Without even hiding her pale naked breasts, the woman stared at Yozaemon and then offered him the ax. Letting Yozaemon hold the ax, the woman said, “You may not tell other villagers that you saw me. Do not ever tell anyone. I once met your ancestor Yoichi. He strictly obeyed my orders and became an important person in the village.” Then, the woman turned around and slowly went underwater.

 

その夜、与左衛門は、夢を見ました。それは、自分の会ったことのない先祖の、与一の夢でした。

斧を持った与一が、滝のそばを通りかかると、ふいに脚を何かにつかまれたように動かなくなり、下を向くと、脚にはクモの糸が、幾重にも絡みついておりました。

そして、糸の先には大きなジョロウグモの姿が！

That night, Yozaemon had a nightmare. Despite never having known his ancestor Yoichi, he appeared in Yozaemon’s nightmare. Yoichi, holding an ax, was walking near the waterfall. Suddenly he became unable to move his feet, as if something was grabbing them. He looked down, and found many spider threads twisting around his feet. At the end of the threads, there was a large silk spider!

 

与一がびっくりして斧を振り、糸を断ち切ると、切れた糸の先端が近くの切り株にふわりと藻のようにゆらめいて、忽ち糸は切り株に巻き付き、そのままぐいと凄まじい力で引っこ抜かれ、近くの滝壺へと吸い込まれていきます。

与一が腰を抜かしていると、ジョロウグモが女の声で言いました。

「よいか……。ここで見たことは、村の者には言ってはならぬ。決してな……」

Yoichi was surprised and cut the threads with his ax. The threads were blown in the wind, like algae in water, and fell onto a stump. The threads twisted around the stump, hauled out the stump with great force and carried it into the basin. To Yoichi, paralyzed with fright, the spider said with a female voice, “You cannot tell anyone what you saw here. This must remain a secret.”

 

そこで、与左衛門は夢から覚めて、布団から飛び起きました。

先祖の与一が、かつて自分と同じように滝に棲む化け物と出会っていたことを、夢を見て追体験をし、与左衛門は恐怖から、全身に冷たい汗をかいておりました。

Yozaemon woke from the nightmare and jumped out of his futon. In his nightmare, he had experienced what his ancestor Yoichi had gone through. Yozaemon, like Yoichi, had encountered a monster living in the waterfall; he broke out into a cold sweat.

 

以来、与左衛門は、村人の誰にも、あの日出会った滝に棲む女のことを話しませんでした。

それから、与左衛門は夜ごと、うなされるようになりました。

夢の中で与左衛門は女にじっと見つめられ――女が、与左衛門を艶めかしく抱き締めてくるのです。

すると、突如として女の白い肌を食い破るように、黄色と黒のまだらの長い脚が8本、みるみる伸びてきて、与左衛門を強く押さえ込み、身動き取れなくされてしまいます。

Yozaemon never told anyone in the village about meeting the woman living in the waterfall. However, he had nightmares every night since then. In the nightmares, the woman stared at Yozaemon and coquettishly pressed herself against him. Then, eight legs with yellow and black spots ripped and came out of her pale skin. The legs quickly stretched and harnessed Yozaemon with great force, making him unable to move.

 

それから女は真っ赤な口を開け、長い舌を見せたかと思うと、唇の端はみるみる裂け、与左衛門は首にガブリと噛みつかれて、バリバリと皮膚を裂かれ、骨を砕かれて、女に喰われていくのでした。

それは、甘美と恐怖が一緒くたになったような、禍々しい恐ろしい夢でした。

与左衛門は、ろくに眠ることもままならなくなり、酒に溺れるようになっていきました。

Then, the woman opened her crimson mouth and showed her long tongue. Her mouth split at both ends of her lips; she bit Yozaemon on his neck. Tearing his skin and breaking his bones, the woman ate him. The horrifying and fearful nightmares were somehow sweet at the same time. Unable to sleep, Yozaemon drank more and more sake; he could not stop.

 

ある夜。

それは、たいそう雨風の強い日でした。その日は午後から天候が崩れたために、きこりの男たちは早々に仕事を切り上げて、久方ぶりに与左衛門の家居に集まって、酒盛りをしていました。

与左衛門は、酒を何度も口に運びながら、苛立つように、外の激しい雨音を聞いておりました。

One night, when the wind and rain were strong, the woodcutters were drinking sake at Yozaemon’s house. The weather had worsened in the afternoon on that day; they had wrapped up the job early and decided to drink, for the first time in a long while, at Yozaemon’s house. Yozaemon, drinking many cups of sake, was listening to the violent sounds of falling rain. He seemed irritated by something.

 

忌々しい……。まるであの、滝のそばにいるような心持ちだ……。

Yozaemon thought, “Damn the rain. The sounds remind me of the waterfall.”

 

そう思う与左衛門の死人のように青ざめた顔に、他の樵たちが不思議そうに首を傾げて囁き合います。

与左衛門が応えるように言いました。

「前に見たんだよ。おれは……。あの、滝には、恐ろしい化け物がいるんだ。とっても美しい女の姿をしているがな……。あの女は、実は、ジョロウグモの化身なんだ……」

言ってしまって、ハッとなりました。

「ああ、何てこった……」

His face was deadly pale. The other woodcutters whispered to each other, wondering why. Yozaemon, as if replying to the other woodcutters, said, “I saw something, a terrifying monster living in the waterfall. It has the semblance of a beautiful woman. The woman is, indeed, a silk spider.” After saying so, he was frightened. Yozaemon thought, “Oh! What have I done?”

 

与左衛門はふらふらと立ち上がると、小便をしにいこうと、扉を開けました。ごうと強い風が吹いて、大粒の雨が目に降り注ぎます。

外に出た与左衛門が、雨に濡れながら用を足すため茂みに向かうと、夜空に稲妻が走りました。

雷鳴がとどろいて地面が揺れ、近くの木が真っ二つに裂けて、火柱が上がります。

He stood up shakily, and opened the door to go out and relieve himself. With the strong wind, large drops of rain entered into his eyes. When Yozaemon, getting wet in the rain, went to a bush to relieve himself, lightning lit up the sky. The lightning hit the earth and shook the ground, split a nearby tree in two and caused a pillar of fire.

 

その向こうに、与左衛門を見つめる、二つの大きな目玉！

やがて、地面をかさかさと、黄色と黒のまだらの脚が這ってきます。それは、巨大なジョロウグモでした。

Behind the fire, two large eyes were staring at Yozaemon! Legs, with yellow and black spots, crawled toward him. It was a large silk spider.

 

「！」

与左衛門は、全身が石のように固まって動けなくなり、やがてジョロウグモの脚が、毎夜の夢のごとく、与左衛門の身体にねっとりと、激しく、絡みついてくるのでした。

“!” Yozaemon was unable to move, as if his body had turned into stone. The legs of the spider passionately and violently twined around him.

 

その夜、与左衛門は、村から消えてしまいました。

村の者たちが、付近一帯をあちこち探しまわって数日後――。

That night Yozaemon disappeared from the village. Villagers looked around the village, trying to find him.

 

与左衛門は、あの滝の滝壺で、冷たい骸となってぷかりぷかりと浮いているのが見つかりました。与左衛門の身体は強い力でねじり潰され、全身の骨が砕けていたのですが、顔はどういうわけか、恍惚の表情を浮かべていたといいます。

A few days later, they found Yozaemon’s body floating in the basin of the waterfall. His body was twisted and his bones had been crushed with great force. His face, however, showed a rapt expression.
